Hotspot questions let learners select specific areas within an image to answer a question. This question type adds visual interaction to assessments and helps maintain learner engagement through variety.
For example, learners could identify potential hazards in an office scene as part of a Health and Safety quiz, or pinpoint anatomical features on a medical diagram.
Super administrators can create Hotspot questions and add them to Question Banks. These questions then appear alongside other question types when learners take assessments.
Create a Hotspot question
Switch to admin view.
Click Tools, then select Question Banks.
Search for and select the relevant Question Bank.
From the Common Tasks list click Questions.
Click Create Question.
Click the Question Type dropdown box, then select Hotspot.
Enter your question in the Question Text field.
To select an image for the Hotspot question, click Choose a file, then click Open to upload.
Click the plus icon to add a Hotspot question.
Resize the box and move it to the desired area of the image - this will become a clickable (but invisible) area when viewed by a user.
You can create as many Hotspots as needed, the user will need to click on all the Hotspots correctly for the question to be marked as correct.
To remove a Hotspot from the question, select the relevant Hotspot then click the cross icon to delete the Hotspot.
Add feedback to the Feedback Text field. When writing this be aware that the user will not be shown the image when they get the feedback at the end of the quiz.
Fill in the Library Level 1 field to categorise your question and add to libraries in your Question Bank.
To add more categories click Add Level.
Hotspot questions will be held in a separate library to your other questions, so you can distinguish between them easily.
Click Save and Finish or Save and Add Another to keep creating questions.
Amend or delete existing Hotspot questions
Switch to admin view.
Click Tools, then select Question Banks.
Search for and select the relevant Question Bank.
From the Common Tasks list click Questions.
Click Browse Questions, then search for the relevant question.
Click the pen and paper icon.
Make your changes, then click Save and Finish.
To delete questions, click the trash icon then click Confirm when prompted.
