Course description
Care environments present unique fire safety challenges with vulnerable residents who may have limited mobility, cognitive impairment, or medical dependencies. Margaret was 84 with limited mobility and mild dementia. When fire started, her care fire warden had 3 minutes to make decisions for Margaret and 29 other vulnerable residents—some recovering from strokes, managing arthritis, dependent on oxygen therapy, or living with hearing impairments. Our Fire Wardens in Care course focuses specifically on care home environments where resident wellbeing, dignity, and safety must be maintained during emergency response.
The course covers care-specific fire hazards including oxygen therapy equipment (creating oxygen-enriched environments where fires burn hotter), mobility and medical equipment creating electrical hazards, and vulnerable resident fire risks from age and medical conditions. Learners explore Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs) with Grab Bags, progressive horizontal evacuation to fire-resistant compartments on the same floor, and CQC compliance including statutory notifications. Interactive content includes real care home fire analysis, PEEP management, equipment shutdown priorities, and night shift scenarios with reduced staffing.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
Identify care-specific fire hazards including oxygen therapy and vulnerable residents
Explain Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans and progressive evacuation procedures
Determine appropriate care home emergency responses for vulnerable residents
Apply CQC compliance requirements and multi-agency coordination procedures
CPD Certified
