Course description

This brand-new course explores the relationship between artificial intelligence and environmental sustainability, equipping UK professionals with the knowledge to make informed decisions about AI use in their firms. Participants will examine AI's carbon footprint, understand emerging sustainability reporting requirements, and learn practical approaches for promoting environmentally responsible AI deployment. The course balances technical understanding with ethical considerations, emphasising that every professional—regardless of role or seniority—can contribute to sustainable AI practices.

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • identify which UK reporting requirements (SECR, TCFD) apply to AI-related emissions and what firms must disclose

  • evaluate AI proposals using sustainability criteria, including necessity, efficiency, and alternative solutions

  • formulate constructive questions about AI sustainability appropriate to their role and seniority level

  • distinguish between AI applications that deliver genuine environmental benefits versus those that increase net carbon emissions

  • assess ethical considerations in AI deployment decisions.
